Songs of Lear

Song of the Goat Theatre, Summerhall, Edinburgh Festival 2013

Anna created the role of The Fool in Songs of Lear, which gained an exceptional critical and audience reception at the Edinburgh Festival 2013, winning the Scotsman Fringe First Award 2012, Herald Archangel Award 2012 and the Musical Theatre Matters Judging Panel Special Award 2012. Anna was nominated for best female role of 2012 by Polish critics in the Teatr quarterly magazine for her role as The Fool.

Creating the role of the Fool in Songs of Lear was a dramatic journey into the heart of Shakepeare’s King Lear. The tragedy of the Fool, who with her pure heart represents aspects of both Cordelia and of the archetypal Sage, who sees and speaks the truth, became an unending search for subtle, almost invisible, gestures and impulses, which were expressed in the songs and in the texts. This search deepened my exploration of what mindful presence in the performer can entail and how it may be shared with an audience. (Anna Zubrzycki)
