Anna performed the role of Lady Macbeth in a radical adaptation of Macbeth developed in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company as part of The Complete Works Festival. Anna’s Lady Macbeth was awarded the Prize of the Head of Lower Silesia for Best Female Role in 2008.

My role as Lady Macbeth in Song of the Goat’s version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth was a deep artistic enquiry into the link between the sung word and spoken word. The first version of the performance, in co-operation with the Royal Shakespeare Company, wove Shakespeare’s text around the dense polyphony of Siberian lamentations and the role of Lady Macbeth was governed by the darkness and despair of this musical environment. The company’s second version of the performance allowed the character of Lady Macbeth to be more fully realised. Work with Kristin Linklater on the inherent music and meaning of Shakespeare’s words, together with the subtle polyphony of the Afilleta singers bore fruit in a multitude of dream-like images and sequences where I immersed myself in the untold story of love between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
